With wireless computing becoming so inexpensive
and easy to install, many households now have wireless capabilities.
Wireless allows users to connect to the Internet, other computers,
and printers without using wires. This provides great convenience
since one can move their computers to various locations without
the need for a wire (wall) connection. This is especially
useful for laptop computers.
Since wireless has become so easy to install,
many people do not implement security. This enables anyone
with a wireless device to connect to your network by simply
getting close enough, which can be several streets away. This
means that they can access the Internet using your connection,
plus they may gain access to your computers.
Securing your network does not guarantee that
it is hacker proof, but certainly adds a significant level
of defense. Adding encryption is something that many people
can configure themselves, but is not generally too costly
